Remember books? I used to actually read them. Now, the only books I own that are printed on actual paper are really just decorations for my office. They make me look smarter.

As for the books I actually read, though? Those are all digital.

Even before there was an iPad, there was a Kindle, and an ereader / ebook revolution. The iPad, and the onslaught of tablets has shifted the landscape some, but Amazon has done an admirable job of elevating its game. The Kindle Paperwhite is still the best device out there if you just want a pure ereader.

But, Amazon doesn’t chain you to the Kindle device. It also has apps for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry, a cloud app, and clients for Mac OS X and Windows–including Windows 8. Amazon’s primary competitor, Barnes and Noble, has followed a similar strategy with its ereader–the Nook.

Day 18 of the 30 Days with Surface Pro series takes a closer look at the Kindle and Nook apps for Windows 8, and examines how well the Surface Pro tablet functions in the role of ereader.
