Corporate vice president and Microsoft’s head of the Data Platform Group (DPG), Ted Kummert is reportedly set to leave the company on January 31. Redmond has already announced this change.
As head of Data Platform Group, Kummert has been in charge of product strategy and development of the application platforms, including cloud services and database and application servers.
According to ZDNet, Kummert is a longtime veteran of Microsoft, having joined the company in 1989.
During his 24-year career, he administered several products — Windows Server Terminal Services, Microsoft Internet Security & Acceleration Server, Forefront Server Security for Exchange, Small Business Server, BizTalk Server, Commerce Server and Host Integration Server.
Kummert also oversaw in-memory database processing (Project Hekaton) on Microsoft’s SQL Server database last year and has led a number of teams at Microsoft during his illustrious career.
Sources say Ted is not going to competitors, in fact, he is joining another organization that it outside of the technology industry. His new employer could announce his appointment in the next few weeks.
A fair few Microsoft veterans have left the company in the past year or so, some moving on, others retiring from the Redmond technology giant — people like Peter Spiro, Jason Zander and obviously, Steven Sinofsky to name a few.
What does this mean for the company’s big data initiatives, however, remains to be seen. Microsoft has not yet announced who would replace Kummert as in charge of the division.
