Recently news about an alleged HTC Windows Phone 8 device called Tiara hit the net, mentioning something called “Windows Phone 8 GDR2” as the OS of choice on the upcoming smartphone. Now Windows expert Mary Jo Foley has news about the future of Windows Phone and the upcoming “Blue” update.
According to sources ‘in the known’, Portico was in fact considered GDR1 of Windows Phone 8 internally. GDR2 on the other hand is another minor update in similar fashion that will be arriving in the next few months.
That’s where it gets interesting. GDR3 is also on the roadmap, and then after that? It’s Windows Blue time. Yep, there are two more ‘minor’ updates in store before Blue arrives in late 2013 or even early 2014 as some would suggest.
Beyond that, we also know a bit more of what to expect with Blue. According to the sources, Blue will bring Windows RT, Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 closer together with new programming interfaces, kernel updates and some user interface enhancements – though the UI changes won’t be too dramatic from the sounds of it.
Blue will also support ALL versions of Windows Phone 8 hardware out there so far, so no worries of being left out here.
Bottom-line is that Blue isn’t as ‘big’ as some folks would have previously had us believe. It represents some big changes in store for future scalability and compatibility between their “Phone” and other Windows efforts, but it clearly isn’t Windows 9.
