Microsoft Executive Hints At A Windows Smart Watch

Redmond seems ready and raring to take the wearable computing fight to competitors like Apple and Samsung to another level, with insiders suggesting that the company is working on a Windows smart watch device.

This would be a perfect extension to the concept of a devices and services company that CEO Steve Ballmer outlined for Microsoft so frequently in the past.

And though the technology titan is yet to confirm or share more detail of its wearable computing plans, sources close to the company have implied that a 1.5-inch Windows smart watch is in the pipeline.

Now Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of the Windows Phone division has said during the Dive Into Mobile conference (organized by AllThingsD) that a smart watch actually does represent a huge opportunity for any company:

“It’s an exciting space. There’s no doubt that wearable computing has incredible potential.”

That is as close a confirmation as one should expect from Redmond these days.

But the bit about incredible potential obviously holds true. It will open up a whole new frontier for computing technology, and Microsoft would want to be at the forefront of this market. And considering the way smartphones are integrated in our daily lives, a smart watch makes all the sense in the world.

If rumors are true, a Windows smart watch could hit store shelves by the end of the year.
