Nokia smartphone users can now treat themselves to the Nokia Chat app. This Windows Phone application, exclusive for Lumia devices allows users to stay in touch with their friends that own other Nokia products.

Nokia Chat was already available for owners of other Nokia devices — Asha, S40 and Symbian — but is now available for download for Lumia phones as well, albeit in beta flavor for the time being.

The app is only available for users in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa and Nigeria. If you are an owner of a Nokia Lumia smartphone in these countries, head over to this page on the Nokia Beta Labs website.

Download and install the Nokia Chat for Windows Phone trial when you are there.

For people in other countries, fret not. The app is expected to be available in for users in other markets in the very near future.

But beta release or not, the app does pack in a lot of features including Person to Person Messaging, Push Notification and Live Tiles Updates, Share a Place, Broadcast Your Location and Find Contacts.

All these features are self-explanatory, but you can visit the link above to read up on more details.

In fact, owners of Windows Phone 8 Lumia devices can enjoy some additional features as well, like the ability to write messages using speech, use voice commands for the application, and set lock screen notifications.

Ah, the perks of being an early adopter!

Just how much of a success or market share the Nokia Chat app can gather up for itself is something that will soon be known, particularly with several other competing services available for the Windows Phone platform. But it is nevertheless a neat little initiative from the Finnish telecom giant to port it anyway.
