After a whole bunch of Windows Blue details over the past few weeks, attention is finally shifting towards the second generation Surface tablet that is likely to make its debut this month.
Microsoft has long been rumored to be working on a new tablet — Surface 2.0, if you will — and most expect the company to unveil it at the BUILD developer conference set to take place in San Francisco on June 26.
And now a report by Bloomberg, citing insider sources, reveals that Microsoft has teamed up with Qualcomm to equip the upcoming tablets with Snapdragon processors, and thereby providing users of these new devices fast wireless data connections.
Unlike the Tegra 3 chipset, upcoming Qualcomm chips have 4G LTE connectivity built in.
Speaking of which, the existing Tegra chip that powers the current Surface RT will continue to be available, but only on specific tablet models according to the aforementioned source.
Official details on Microsoft’s new tablet are scarce, and the technology titan has done a good job keeping things under control. But several sources close to the matter have indicated that the technology titan is considering rolling out an affordable 8-inch tablet to compete against the iPad Mini and Nexus 7.
Expect an official announcement from Redmond on June 26, the first day of the BUILD developer conference, where the company is also expected to unveil the anticipated Windows 8.1 Preview.
But as things stand, this Qualcomm news is a welcoming one — and will help provide buyers and uses with more variety when it comes to Windows powered slates.
