If there is one thing you can be sure of in the final version of Windows 8.1, it is a complete overhaul of the default Metro apps. In fact, Microsoft had promised to improve the features of the built-in Metro apps in its upcoming operating system early on during development.
And one such Metro app that has squarely been in focus ever since is the SkyDrive tool.
While the software titan has occasionally detailed the features of the revamped SkyDrive app in Windows 8.1, there has been some speculation on some features that could be included in the upgrade.
Now, two engineers working on the app recently confirmed a few of these expected features.
Omar Shahine and Mona Akmal, two members of the SkyDrive team, were invited to an AMA session on Reddit. And the engineers confirmed that the RTM version of Windows 8.1 will come with an option to change the default file saving location.
This was, as you may recall, a feature that was missing from Windows 8.1 Preview:
“SkyDrive in 8.1 lets you have way more files on your local machine from your SkyDrive than the amount of storage available – we call them placeholder files — we saw in the real world that the amount on disk people were using compared to the amount of data they had stored in SkyDrive was < 5%.”
The two revealed that many of these improvements are already being tested right now — another confirmation that we are nearing the launch of the RTM version of the operating system:
“Moving the location of where the files live in 8.1 – we definitely want to give you more choice. It was unfortunate that we couldn’t get this into the Windows 8.1 Preview release but it is currently running in the build I have.”
Don’t know about unfortunate. But as long as the feature makes it in the final cut of the OS, all will be well with the world.
Nevertheless, the SkyDrive tool seems to be coming along rather well. Quite similarly to the web client of the cloud storage service, which itself is regularly updated with new features, format support sharing options — allowing users the ability to better manage their files in the cloud.
