Education is one area where that has traditionally always remained in focus for Microsoft. Schools, colleges and universities represent a key area for the technology titan, even as it transitions into a devices and services concept.

The company recently announced a special discount offer for educational institutes to purchase Surface RT tablets for an astounding price of $199.

While this clearly is an attempt to clear out inventories in anticipation for a newer model of the tablet, it also provides Microsoft with an opportunity to introduce its Windows RT powered slate (along with the Office suite of productivity applications) in the education sector.

And according to a statement sent to ZDNet, Microsoft has announced that the discount will be extended beyond its original date of August 30 to September 30, in order to give more schools a chance to take advantage of the offer:

“Thanks to great customer interest, we are thrilled to share that this special offer to education institutions will continue until the end of September. Microsoft has a long tradition of supporting education institutions, and this offer is intended to get Surface in the hands of even more educators and students.”

Both the Surface RT and the Surface Pro have received a number of promotional and discount campaigns these past few months, as Redmond works on the second generation lineup of Surface slates.

These refreshed tablets are likely to be unveiled before the end of the year, just in time for the important holiday shopping season.
