I guess if you have to pick a date, there is none better than launch day. October 18 is sure to be the day of days when it comes to product launches, that much is a given.

Microsoft is unleashing a whole lineup of refreshes and upgrades to a number of its operating systems (and enterprise software) on this day, and the anticipation could not be higher.

And while social networking giant Facebook has already confirmed that it is developing its very own Metro client for Windows 8, we did not have a concrete launch date up on when the official app would arrive — until now, that is.

It appears that the anticipated app is likely to hit the Windows Store by in October together with the various 8.1 upgrades.

Redmond has pretty much confirmed on the official Spanish Twitter account of its Windows division that the Facebook app for Windows 8 is on track to go live in the Windows Store on October 18, which means that it will be available at the same time with the first major overhaul of its modern OS.

And in case you are wondering, no other specifics have been provided.

But the Metro version of the Facebook client is expected to work on both Windows 8 and Windows RT, thereby providing support for PCs and touch enabled devices like the ever increasing number of Windows powered tablets, including Microsoft’s own Surface RT.

For the time being, however, the best solution for using Facebook in a Metro environment remains an app called Facebook Touch. It offers advanced features in a great looking user interface.

  • That’s good. I really don’t like the WP7 app, and I’ve downloaded a few on my 8.1 preview test system. Some of them are ok, but I wouldn’t say any of them are great. I kind of like the way the one on iPad looks, but it’s missing too many features of the mobile website.
