It has been a month or so since Windows 8.1 launched, but news quickly floated up that Microsoft is already working on the next update to the operating system.
Now it seems that the company is working on two specific updates, and they are on track for release in 2014 and 2015 respectively. The first of this is likely to be called either ‘Update 1’ or ‘Spring 2014 GDR Update’, while the second one could be known as ‘Threshold’.
This new information comes courtesy Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet, who is reporting that the OS head at Microsoft Terry Myerson revealed this name during a private meeting.
He further claimed that Redmond is targeting release the second update in early 2015.
Interestingly, while Microsoft has not talked about these plans, the above report states that Threshold will actually be the update that brings the various versions of Windows together. Microsoft is, as CEO Steve Ballmer recently pointed out, is ready to put emphasis on high value activities.
Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox One are reportedly in line to get this new round of update, and as you can imagine, Windows RT is not part of the Threshold roll out.
In other words, while these may still be rumors, we do have another confirmation that Microsoft is indeed ready to merge its tablet-oriented operating system, Windows RT, with Windows Phone.
