bold steps in the last couple of years, perhaps few more so than the release of a tablet with a large display in the form of the Surface Pro 3. This 12-inch device runs the full version of Windows 8.1. And according to market research firm IDC, Microsoft did the right thing here — this is where the market is heading, and sales of 2-in-1 devices with larger displays are very likely to increase in the months to come. The Surface Pro 3, then, is a tablet that could benefit from this trend, says IDC. In the words of Jitesh Ubrani, research analyst, Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker:
“The shift back toward larger screens will mark a welcome sea change for most vendors as the average selling price for these devices will remain roughly 50 percent higher than the average sub-8-inch device. Microsoft is also expected to benefit from this shift as the share for Windows-based devices is expected to double between now and 2018.”Point to note about the average selling price being higher for these larger devices, but ultimately, people are willing to pay a premium for such slates. Then again, price might be the only problem with the Surface Pro 3, as this latest addition to the Surface family brings it in terms of hardware, build quality and overall sleekness. The top of the line model retails for $1,949, but it does buy you a powerful replacement for your laptop. Which is good enough for most power users, including corporate ones.]]>

So they’re banking on Tablets replacing laptops? Could be smart or could be a disaster. Time will tell.
Wait aren’t these the same people who said smaller tablets were the future? I think tablets will eventually be the future. At some point we will be living in a semi-Star Trek type world. We’ll have computers in some forms but we might use tablets to interface with larger devices and have a lot more thinner and transparent devices.
You’re right. Indecision with this kind of stuff is a big issues. I think we’re headed towards tablets replacing computers as well. Keyboards may be obsolete in 20 years.
They probably see smart phone is getting bigger and bigger. It will finally make mini tablets out of market. So they position themselves 10″ RT and 12″ pro tablets. Also, this could distinguish RT from SP3.
Yup, tablets are the future. Desktops won’t exist anymore in a few years. They’ll be replaced by tablets that dock to a large monitor and keyboard… No need to spend $500-$1k for a desktop (in addition to a laptop/tablet) when a cheap monitor plus keyboard will play nicely with your mobile!
All this provided that mobile hardware can become powerful enough for power use, of course!
