here. But now a new report by Reuters that cites Finnish daily Helsingin Sanomat reveals that the technology giant is planning to lay off some 1,000 workers from its mobile phone unit. Now, 500 of these are people working in the northern part of the country, in Oulu, at a former Nokia research and development unit. Their specialty is software that powers basic feature phones, and since Microsoft is going all in with smartphones, this division does not make much sense now. As a result, the company is turning to job cuts — Microsoft’s first major one since 2009. The remaining 500 employees are scattered around other Nokia facilities in Finland, details of which are yet to be determined by the source. In any case, CEO Satya Nadella is expected to share more information on this on July 22. Microsoft currently employs more than 127,000 employees, 25,000 of which were added to the payroll after the acquisition of Nokia’s devices and services unit was completed earlier this year.]]>
