Now, 500 of these are people working in the northern part of the country, in Oulu, at a former Nokia research and development unit. Their specialty is software that powers basic feature phones, and since Microsoft is going all in with smartphones, this division does not make much sense now. As a result, the company is turning to job cuts — Microsoft’s first major one since 2009. The remaining 500 employees are scattered around other Nokia facilities in Finland, details of which are yet to be determined by the source. In any case, CEO Satya Nadella is expected to share more information on this on July 22. That includes everyone from CEO to janitor worldwide. Sounds right to me.
I don’t know enough about the logistics of running an enormous corporation, but I honestly think that sounds pretty low. I would have expected closer to 200,000, but I guess not.
