I don’t know about you guys, but Paint, along with the good old Calculator, have been two of my most used Windows programs over the years. Paint for saving screenshots, and Calculator for, well, calculating.
Microsoft, of course, replaced them both with modern apps.
The Calculator app has been available on Windows 10 for years now, while the new Paint 3D app that arrived with the Creators Update has now become the focus for the company moving forward.
So much so, that the software titan listed the classic Microsoft Paint app among the list of features it was deprecating in the upcoming Windows 10 Fall Creators Update — also known as the Redstone 3 update for the OS.
This, the company confirmed, in a knowledge base article.
Long story short, many of the mainstream media outlets rushed to announce that Redmond was killing off the super popular Paint application, after 32 years on the market, nonetheless. It has been part of all versions of Windows released until now.
Looks like Microsoft has had a change of heart, as the company has officially confirmed that Microsoft Paint is not going anywhere, and instead will find a home on the Windows Store.
As Megan Saunders, General Manager, 3D for Everyone Initiative, Windows Experiences, explained:
“Today, we’ve seen an incredible outpouring of support and nostalgia around MS Paint. If there’s anything we learned, it’s that after 32 years, MS Paint has a lot of fans. It’s been amazing to see so much love for our trusty old app. Amidst today’s commentary around MS Paint we wanted to take this opportunity to set the record straight, clear up some confusion and share some good news.
MS Paint is here to stay, it will just have a new home soon, in the Windows Store where it will be available for free.”
Trusty old app, indeed.
What this basically means is that while the app will continue to live on through the Windows Store, any new features that Microsoft rolls out will not be available for older versions of the operating system. It is very clear that the software giant wants everyone to use its shiny new Paint 3D app.
Oh well, danger averted.
