Almost everyone who has been following the development of the upcoming Windows Blue has been interested in finding out whether Microsoft will be bringing the Start button back in the new OS.

We have had several rumors and leaked builds that shed some light on this feature.

But now Microsoft has officially confirmed that the Start button will be included with Windows 8.1, though the software titan has released only vague details about this feature — the removal of which has often been cited as one of the biggest reasons for the slow uptake of Windows 8.

Antoine Leblond, the corporate vice president, Windows Program Management said in a blog post:

“We’ve improved the way you navigate to Start with the mouse by changing the Start “tip” to be the familiar Windows logo. The new tip appears anytime you move the mouse to the bottom left corner of the screen, and is always visible on the taskbar when on the desktop.”

As things stand, the Start button that returns in Windows 8.1 will allow users to quickly launch the Start Screen. It will be placed in the same lower left corner as previous versions of the operating system.

“There are also options to change what the corners do, and options to boot into alternate screens. For example, if you prefer to see the Apps view versus all the tiles, you can choose to have the Start screen go directly to Apps view.”

Even though most Windows 8 users have adjusted to the Start Screen (and those that haven’t are probably using third party Start Menu solutions), there are several that still want the Start button back in Windows as it original was.

Nevertheless, it appears that Microsoft is not making this out to be a big deal, and the software titan has, as of yet, only revealed minor details about its comeback.

  • I don’t get what people like so much about the Start button. There’s no advantage, if fact is saves room on the taskbar. Are people really so illiterate that they can’t click in the same place if the button is hidden?
