Exclusive Rumor: Kinect 2 to accompany launch of Windows 8

Now this is a really interesting source from my tipster “Ryan”.

I have no way of corroborating or verifying this so believe at your own risk.

He says the following:

Microsoft are working on the sequel to the home version of Kinect which will be called the Kinect 2.

The Kinect 2 will be between 40 to 60% smaller than the current Kinect and may have a totally different sleeker design.

The purpose of the redesign will be to get it onto corporate and home desktops/laptops without a large footprint – basically consumers will be able to look at it like a webcam.

The smaller version of the kinect will then be integrated with Windows 8 and you will be able to use it for security authentication as well as other advanced operating system features in development.

He says right now, Microsoft is working very hard to incorporate the use of “basic hand gestures” into the operating system as the first step towards making Windows easier to use.

Also look for voice commands for basic OS functionality as another feature that  Microsoft will promote heavily..

Pretty interesting…

  • Makes total sense. The thing is too wide as is right now…

  • Makes sense.

I think that it could be a game changer if Microsoft do it right…

  • I really hope that the Kinect system will be available for windows 8. Not only for the gaming section, but also for a system based voice recognition.

I don’t think that I will jump in front of my PC, but a simple swipe gesture for the next music track will be very useful.

      Especially for HTPCs!
Microsoft already has their 10-foot user interface with WMC, such a device for UI control without the need of a remote would be KILLER!

  • If both products will co-launch it would be logical to assume that kinect will be integrated in windows 8. It will be interesting to see what developers come up with for the PC platform.

    • Well, if you had an iPhone 2, wouldn’t you have to go buy the iPhone 3?
I say, if you already have an Kinect, than wait and save your money for the Kinect 3; everything gets better in time, so wasting your money on something that will be updated again would be silly…
I’m glad I never bought a Kinect; it’s on my christmas list, but I’ll just wait next year for the Kinect 2, since I don’t have either… I was only inspired to get one after seeing the preview for Ryse.

  • Instant Kinect. Oh, the possibilities when the lag is cut and the software is mature.

    1) Kinect built into standard HTDVs
    2) Corporate Kinect – very high quality video and minimal lag (with high price)
    3) Xbox2 Kinect – faster, less lag, better, yummy
    4) Micro Kinect – For use with laptops and other mobile applications
    5) Home Kinect – for use with PCs
    6) Tablet Kinect – yes, for tablets – how cool can it look?
    7) Phone Kinect – sure, why not? gestures for your smartphone.
    8) Shades Kinect – What, you think smart shades are that far away?

Microsoft would be fools not to be burning the midnight oil on Kinect expansion. They are not fools.
