Analysis – Apples WWDC and how it relates to Microsoft

2 or 3 events. They also released a mission statement for the OS as well as a Video for people to get excited about. Keep in mind, approximately 1 Billion people use Windows. The takeway from most analysts was

  • Microsoft is taking a brave stance
  • It’s risky and a change to Windows
  • It’s great
  • It’s not great
  • It’s a radical change to the OS
Contrast that with what we have just seen from Apple. They just (on day one of their World Wide Developer’s Conference) released a bunch of really incredible changes to their products. What I see from both companies is the difference between a checkers player and a chess player. Microsoft are going to try and make it easier to use an operating system to do things. Apple are going to change the way you listen to music, send and share photos and buy apps online. Microsoft are going to get into tablets with ARM and different types of chips. Apple are trying to create a consistent experience for you independent of what platform you are on. Microsoft are talking about putting 2 Operting Systems into one where you can switch between them. Apple are making platforms almost irrelevant and have officially moved to the cloud. The main difference is that Apple makes your life easier and more fun. In addition, they are simply better at:
  1. User Interface Design
  2. Bold strategic steps
  3. Thinking through how to add value to the consumer
  4. Articulating that value
  5. Marketing that value
As someone who covers a lot of Microsoft Windows related content I have to say..Night and Day. After covering WWDC 2011 today, it makes covering Windows 8 beta seem a little …outdated… What do you guys think?]]>

  • Assuming this probably the last time i come here as i get more and better informations from other sites, let me just tell you just this:
If you are such as a fan of Apple you should give up dealing with a Windows 8 related site and focus exclusively on Apple related stuff.
    Bye.

    • That’s good feedback. I like Windows but I have to tell it like it is. If it offends, thats just the way the cookie crumbles…

  • Very bold
post for a Windows 8 site, you’re sure to lose some readers. Your opinion is
well and all, but this should not be the opinion of a Windows and Microsoft
supporter. A MS site should be discussing how Apple ripped off features from
WP7 on their new IOS update. How the Lion update won’t change the fact that
Windows is and still will be the dominant operation system for years to come,
and how Microsoft has been leveraging the cloud for a long time now while apple
is just getting started. I was afraid apple was going to pull some great hat
trick and come up with something awesome again, but hell, they flat out fell on
their face. What they are bringing is not innovation anymore; it is just
catching up to their challengers, especially with IOS.
    PD. Apple is
using MS resources for their iCloud service, how’s that for innovation!
This post, and the other post talking about the iphone, etc., are sure losing you some points!

    • Hey Carlos,
           Great to hear your feedback.
This is a Windows 8 site but I am not a fanboy on either side. I love Windows 7 and have another site (www.windows7update.com) dedicated to that. Windows 8 is not out yet and my story just reflected an analysis of the way both companies rolled out their products over the past week.
You have very valid points but the fact that Microsoft got to the cloud first is almost irrelevant. In the history books Christopher Columbus “discovered” America but the truth is there were people already here. He just won the marketing war.
Ultimately Apple are doing a better job of articulating and marketing their stuff and regarding innovation – well they actually CREATED a segment that didn’t exist (Ipads/mobile).
On this site, I try very hard not to blow smoke up anybody’s ass. If it’s exciting (Kinect 2, History Vault, Chatter), I acknowledge it’s exciting. If Apple or Google are competing at a higher level, I owe it to you guys to state that as well.
The web’s a big place and visitors have choices.
      🙂
