Redmond released the Network Speed Test app to great reception (pun always intended) on Windows Phone 8 last month, giving smartphone owners powered by its mobile platform an easy way to test the upload and download speeds of their network.

A port for Windows 8 was greatly anticipated, and now the popular app has arrived on the Windows Store. The Metro app is developed by Microsoft Research, and makes use of the same simple and slick interface of the smartphone app.

Microsoft detailed the app very fittingly in the official description:

“Using servers all over the world, Network Speed Test measures your network connection’s latency and throughput. Based on your connection’s speed, Network Speed Test will tell you what activities you might be able to do, such as stream music or video calls. Slide to the right to see a history of your previous tests for easy comparisons.”

Along with allowing users to find out the download and upload speed of their Internet connection on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, the Network Speed Test app also packs in dedicated options to measure network latency.

The free app also provides network performance history that can be used to track network improvements. It can be deployed on both Windows 8 and Window RT.
