No harm in copying a good though, right? The Spotlight feature on Apple devices is quite good, and it looks like Cortana is getting something similar in Windows 10 with the Redstone 4 update.

The integration of the digital voice assistant was seen as a standout feature of the OS, but ever since its introduction in Windows 10, Cortana has more or less remained the same when it comes to the both the user interface and usability.

It’s unintuitive, for the lack of a better word.

However, as reported by the Italian source, the recently released build 17040 brought several improvements that breathed a new life into the search UI of the operating system. A new life, inspired by the longtime Microsoft rival, Apple.

See for yourself:

Basically, Microsoft is bringing along a universal search feature called Spotlight, which goes a long way towards making the UI the center of attention every time he or she searches for something. Which is just what Cortana needed, as most of the time it sat inconspicuously on the Taskbar, ignored.

In case you want to give this new option a try, you can do so via this registry trick below, as Microsoft is yet to enable this for Insiders.

  • Open Registry Editor (Type “regedit” on Run.)
  • Visit HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search\Flighting.
  • On the Flighting folder, make a new “override” key.
  • Create a new DWORD with the name ImmersiveSearch and set the value to 1 on the new override key.
  • Finally, restart your system and enjoy the new UI.

This new feature works the same was as before, in case you’re wondering.

Pressing Win + S invokes the UI to the center of the screen, and Cortana traverses through your files, settings, pictures, music, videos, and applications the same way as before. Only with the Fluent Design System enabled.
