Google Chrome Also Gets A Dark Mode

The darkness has fallen! Google has been pretty good adding OS specific features to its Chrome browser as of late. The browser already has a few Fluent Design elements splattered around.

And it looks like the company is continuing on the good work here.

There is talk that it is giving the world’s most popular browser a dark look — building on the dark mode that the browser received for macOS Mojave. This new style may soon be enabled for the Windows 10 version of the web browser.

Although no details have been provided on when this feature is projected to become available to everyone, though we have confirmation that a dark mode is in development and coming soon.

This bug report details what we can expect:

“Windows 10 allows users to set their apps to “light” or “dark” mode. Chrome should respect this. The most obvious hack is to use the default incognito color scheme in normal mode (as well as incognito) if the system is in dark mode. Long-term, we should perhaps have a better answer. This has been a popular external request for some time.”

To be clear, this new dark mode will reflect the Windows system theme.

What we don’t have a confirmation is whether users will get the opportunity to go against the system theme. But even if we don’t get it officially, the community probably will unearth some unofficial workarounds to enable it.

For the time being, though, if you want to take this new look for a test drive, you can enable it via the Google Chrome Canary distributions.

Excellent way to counter eye fatigue and reduce battery consumption on devices with AMOLED screens.

No wonder there is a dark mode push industrywide.
