Could a Windows Phone 8 version of the Ascend Mate be in the works?
Huawei is coming to town. As expected, the company has now unveiled the Huawei Ascend W1. So what’s in store for the W1? Nothing too exciting, to be totally frank. The W1 is a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 with 512MB of RAM, a 4-inch display, 4GB storage, microSD and a 1,950mAh battery.
It’s not a horrible looking device by any means, but again– we’ve been here. There are already many similar offerings from competitors like HTC and Nokia. Of course, competition is good, and so is having options.
What’s really exciting though is the future potential of what Huawei could bring to the table. Huawei product manager Richard Bhudhikanok has confirmed there are other devices in the works, things that aren’t being shown off just yet. When will we see them? Hard to say, but MWC seems a likely bet. What’s even more exciting is a statement this manager made to CNET Asia. He says that the other Windows Phone 8 handset in works is going to be “similar” to the Ascend Mate.
For those that don’t know, the Mate is a 6.1-inch monster phablet of a device, which of course runs Android. Having a Windows Phone 8 relative is exciting indeed, and likely the closest we’ll ever come to an official Windows Phone 8 tablet.
So if you aren’t impressed by Huawei’s W1, hold tight, MWC could be a pleasant surprise. Of course not everyone likes phablets. They are a device that some feel is too big, but others find perfect because it merges the best of the tablet and phone world.
