Intel has had a pretty lofty 2013 for its tablet processors, compared to previous years. And now it appears that the company has even more ambitious plans in 2014.
After launching Bay Trail chips for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 powered tablets, the chip giant is now ready to bring its solutions to Android, and is even said to be talking to cheap Chinese white box vendors in an attempt to boost sales and market share.
But while this is the next logical step for the company, its main emphasis remains Windows devices.
And according to this report, the chip maker is ready to unleash two whole new lines of processors next year. The Cherry Trail platform is expected to be launched by September 2014. This is an Atom lineup based on 14nm manufacturing process, with Airmont CPU cores and next generation graphics.
These will be implemented in 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 8.1 (and Android) slates with screen sizes between 8-inch and 10-inch. Prices for these devices are expected to start at $249.
Another platform is slated for release in Q4 2014 that goes by the name of Willow Trail.
Chips based on these processors will be based on 14nm Goldmont architecture, and will once again support both Windows 8.1 and Android tablets. These should hit the store shelves by the end of the year, near the important Holiday shopping season.
