The recent rumor that Microsoft is about to introduce fingerprint support in Windows 8.1 has excited fans of the platform, even if the software titan has remained completely tight-lipped on the matter.
But eagle eyed technology enthusiasts have already unearthed underlying code that gives credence to the speculation that such a feature could be the part of Microsoft’s new operating system.
And now we may just have a visual confirmation.
A new screenshot that reached the web just a few hours ago shows that Microsoft is indeed working on fingerprint authentication for Windows 8.1.
According to a report over at WinBeta, support for this fingerprint authentication feature has been spotted in a recently leaked developer build of Windows 8.1, meaning there is a fair chance that it may actually make the cut in the preview version of the operating system that is to be released in June.
As can be seen from the image above, the upcoming OS allows adding a fingerprint to a user account and requires several scans of the user’s fingerprint to define a clear image.
And it obviously requires a fingerprint reader — which could well be included with the next generation Surface tablets, along with the countless other Windows RT 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Pro tablets that will hit store shelves in the coming months.
Nevertheless, this is just a leaked screenshot, and there is no official confirmation from Microsoft yet on whether it plans to implement this into the final version of the OS or not.
