Skype, Microsoft’s universally popular VoIP platform now comes preinstalled on all copies of Windows 8.1 RTM. And while a number of leaked ISOs of the upcoming OS have been floating around, the company officially made Windows 8.1 RTM available for download yesterday.
This means there is no better time to officially introduced Skype for Windows 8.1 RTM.
And Redmond has done just that — the technology titan confirmed the news in a blog post published earlier today, which also reveals many of the new features that will be exclusively available to users that are running Windows 8.1.
Users of Microsoft’s latest operating system will get an option to call a phone number that they find on the web when using Internet Explorer 11. This is actually a feature that, you may be aware, is already available via the Click to Call plugin that Microsoft offers:
“We began this journey with Skype for Windows 8, by making it possible for you to call anyone from your People app and pinned favorites, and share your photos and files directly from SkyDrive. Now, with Skype for Windows 8.1, you can click to call directly through Internet Explorer, which makes booking a restaurant reservation a faster and more productive experience.”
This refreshed version also brings full Snap View mode support when clicking on phone numbers in Internet Explorer 11. Additionally, Skype now displays missed calls and instant messages both on the Start screen and the lock screen.
And finally, Skype automatically moves to the side in Windows 8.1 when a link is selected in Skype or shared item, letting users focus on what they are doing.
