Brace for impact! An avalanche of Surface news is heading your way, as Microsoft gets ready to unleash the second generation lineup of its anticipated tablets in mere minutes.
The company teased the September 23 event in New York a couple of weeks ago.
And just has been the case for a lot of its products lately, Redmond has taken the silent road once again and remained completely tightlipped on what its refreshed Surface family will bring around. That’s not to say a bucketful of details have not reached the web via unofficial channels.
Most of them have come from insider sources or people close to the matter.
Famed Microsoft watcher, Paul Thurrott, for example, claims that the refreshed Surface RT tablet will now just be called simply the Surface 2. This slate is set to be powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor that is said to be optimized for longer battery life along with increased computational performance.
Another important upgrade seems to be on the card — the screen.
The device is reportedly equipped with a ClearType Full HD display, with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels. This is essentially the same screen that is available on the current Surface Pro model, so it’s quite a nice bump. In terms of size, things will remain steady at 10.6 inches.
Another upgrade includes the enhanced battery, which should offer usage times of up to 8 hours on a single charge. Weight and thickness of the refreshed Windows RT tablet will remain the same at 680 grams and 9.3 mm respectively.
Things are relatively stable for the Surface Pro as well — save for a few key upgrades.
The Pro variant of the slate is getting a much needed CPU enhancement in the form of the latest Core i5 solutions from Intel. The Haswell series of processors promise increased processing and graphical performance at lower power requirements, leading to improved battery times for the Pro tablet.
Additionally, the technology titan is also expected to launch several new accessories including the exciting Power Cover that doubles up as an external battery.
