Unity, the maker of popular game development tools, officially announced the availability of a new version of its development platform. Unity 4.2 arrives with support for an expanded list of mobile operating systems.
The game engine and development toolset is now available on Microsoft’s Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 as well as the BlackBerry 10 platform.
In a recent blog post, the company announced:
“That’s right, we’ve doubled the number of mobile platforms Unity supports! Now it’s up to you guys to create new games and port existing titles to these platforms so even more people can benefit from your creative talents.
In Unity 4.2, all users of the free version of Unity can publish to any mobile platform they wish, be it Windows Phone 8, Windows Store, iOS, Android or BlackBerry 10 without it costing a dime.”
To celebrate the occasion, the company has launched a new contest in a partnership with Microsoft with a total prize pool of over $100,000. Grand prizes of $30,000 each for the best Unity game made for Windows 8/RT and Windows Phone 8 respectively are the highlight.
But second and third place prizes of $10,000and $5,000 complete the deal.
The contest also has several honorable mention categories including Best New Game Content, Best Port of an Existing Game, Best Gameplay, Best use of native features, and Best Use of Live Tiles.
Developers that win in these categories will receive a free Unity Pro license plus a Windows Store Pro publishing add-on. Speaking of which, developers that have already made Unity based games for other platforms can port them to the new Windows platforms and enter the contest.
The deadline for entry is September 30. You guys game?
