Don’t look now, but it appears that Microsoft has finally added a few new features to the other File Explorer that is available on Windows 10. Yes, the UWP version.
Not many folks know about this variant, fewer still use it.
But it exists, neatly tucked away.
Obviously, Windows 10 Mobile have always had one, and the Redmond based software giant brought it to PCs all the way back in 2016. The universal File Explorer actually came standard out the box with Windows 10 version 1703. But for some fine reason, it has always been hidden.
You can activate it by creating a shortcut with the following text:
explorer shell:AppsFolder\c5e2524a-ea46-4f67-841f-6a9465d9d515_cw5n1h2txyewy!App
It’s an okay app, as far as apps go.
There’s a reason why Microsoft has it hidden, after all.
Anyway, the company got around adding some new features to it recently. As noted, the universal file manager in Windows 10 picked up these additions that improve usability and navigation:
- Drag and drop support
- Better right-click menu support
- Improved copy/paste system similar to legacy File Explorer
- New cut option
- Can set images as wallpaper directly from the app
- UI buttons at the top instead of bottom of the app
Good going.
And in case you’re wondering why Microsoft is bothering at all, it is because the company wants to update the application for Windows Core OS. This is an application that has been specifically created for Windows 10 devices that don’t run legacy software.
Devices like Windows powered phones, Xbox gaming consoles and HoloLens.
Redmond is, obviously, also working on upcoming creations like the Surface Hub 2, HoloLens 2 and the mythic Andromeda, which is where this app will fit right in.
Microsoft has no current plans to replace the existing File Explorer with the UWP version, but that is something that can change in time, if the company feels it is fully featured and ready for prime time.
