here. And speaking of user interfaces, the Windows Phone port of VLC Player comes with some great designs too, as this summer gallery shows. Sadly (or not), this release for Microsoft’s mobile operating system was once again pushed back in late August due to development issues. The latest from the developers is that this port is still not as stable as the desktop release. Which is understandable, this uses the ARM based architecture, and coding multimedia apps on a new architecture is always finicky. Issues are only natural, only expected. But the team also shared some recent changes to the app. First up there is a switch from WinRTsock to Winsock, the new builds also make use of Windows 8.1 widgets, there’s libVLC 2.2.0, and of course the move of the interface code to universal. Technical stuff, but in layman terms, this is going to an enhanced, improved release — one that works on all versions of Windows, the desktop, Windows RT and Windows Phone. Today’s release is a first step towards this, even if a fair bit of work on the interface remains for the smartphone version. All said and done, though, it shouldn’t be too long before you are enjoying VLC for Windows Phone on your smartphone or phablet.]]>
