A new version of VLC for Windows Phone is up for grabs today, and even though it still is in beta development stage, it has received some new changes that significantly improves user experience.

VideoLAN released VLC for Windows Phone earlier this month.

The official release notes published in the store reveal that this new version brings a new dark theme, along with fresh icons — should give the application a bit more eye candy on Windows Phone, if nothing else. A welcome new addition.

In terms of performance enhancements, though, the developers have added in improved support for playing 720p videos on high end devices.

Meaning, those that are using handsets like the Lumia 930 or Lumia 1520, high definition videos that have a pixel resolution of 720p should play more smoothly than before. Users had previously reported certain issues with content of this type, so hopefully they are history now.

This new release also brings improvements to music indexation algorithm improvements, plus support for local and embedded music covers. More welcome additions.

For fans of the app, this looks like a fairly significant update, even as a beta software, and brings VLC for Windows Phone one step closer to final release on the mobile operating platform. Be on the lookout for bugs and other issues, however, if you upgrade.
