Boy, that was quick! Microsoft has released a cumulative update for Windows 11 in the Beta and Release Preview channels that fixes certain inbox apps in the operating system.
More specifically, these applications not launching due to the expiry of a digital certificate.
This latest bug is apparently rather widespread, and news of it causing issues for users spread this week. Programs like the Snipping Tool, Touch Keyboard, Voice Typing, the Emoji Panel, and experiences like Getting Started and Tips were the ones affected.
And to take care of things, Redmond has made available KB5008295 for Insiders.
The company explains in an announcement:
“We fixed a known issue that might prevent some users from opening or using certain built-in Windows apps or parts of some built-in apps. This issue occurs because of a Microsoft digital certificate that expired October 31, 2021.”
Worth knowing that you should not see any change in terms of build number after installing this cumulative update — your installation will stay on the same version as it was before.
Redmond says that the only way to figure out if the update is installed will be to check the list of updates that are already deployed on your computer. This can be done by going to Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
Since this KB5008295 is only available to Windows Insiders, those on the release version of Windows 11 will have to wait until Patch Tuesday drops next week to get in on this fix.
