analyst, users still chose their operating systems based on the app ecosystem, which clearly represents a big opportunity for Microsoft to drive home an advantage against competitors like iOS and Android. In the words of Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner:

“In emerging markets where other operating systems may have a chance, consumers will start to move to devices based on the operating system in order to access applications.”
Now, while some progress has been made on the Windows front, both Windows Phone and Windows RT are lagging behind when it comes to popular solutions that are available on other mobile app stores. • Microsoft made a big mistake by not having a ton or apps already lined up before the release of Windows 8. They probably miscalculated that it wouldn’t matter because still having the desktop would make up for it. I guess it some ways it makes sense on the PC, but makes none at all for the Surface. Microsoft has to get the apps and they have to be as good or better than on other platforms

    • Agreed completely. Whether I agree with it or not, Apps are an integral part of technology nowadays, so this report doesn’t come as much of a surprise, but it’s something Microsoft should keep in mind.
