The launch of a new version of Windows always is a very big occasion, not just for Microsoft, but the various hardware partners as well, that bring to market their brand new products.
And with Windows 8.1 just around the corner, Redmond is certain to get a helping hand from several vendors — Acer and Asus both being at the forefront this time, as both companies are reportedly betting big on the operating system.
Both Taiwanese companies are planning to launch new tablets powered by Windows 8.1 later this year.
Forbes is reporting that the two leading OEMs are keen to make the most of the growing interest in the new operating system, one that not only brings back the Start button, but also includes a number of notable optimizations for users.
According to Sean Yang, an assistant vice president at Taipei-based market research firm TrendForce:
“Acer and Asus are always first to get new OS’s from Windows, so Windows 8.1 would be following their previous model. In the consumer market it’s important to be the first.”
It is worth noting here that this time last year there was a bit of an uncertainty regarding Microsoft’s modern operating platform, Windows 8. The hardware companies did bring around new products, but there was a distinct lack of effort in terms of innovation.
Touch was a bold new frontier back then — at least for PC makers.
Now, however, the hardware companies seem rather confident as they are announcing new touch enabled products that target almost all price points.
Acer and Asus are yet to completely confirm their Windows 8.1 plans until now, but we should have complete details in the coming weeks as we get closer to launch of the upcoming operating system.

Awesome. I can’t wait to see what comes of this. I love the Lenovo Yoga and Surface Pro. Hopefully we’ll see some equally innovative stuff.
Yup, I’m sure both companies will target high end as well as the affordable segment of the market. We should know what they are cooking in the next couple of weeks leading up to the launch of Windows 8.1.
