Like what you see on Windows 8.1, but want to make the new operating system a bit more familiar? Well now you can with Aero Glass 1.0 Beta 2 that is now compatible with the final version of the new operating system.

Windows 8.1, just like Windows 8, comes with a flat user interface, instead of the glassy look of the Windows past (7 and Vista). But if this new design philosophy is not quite your cup of tea, then you can bring back the Aero Glass theme with this handy utility.

The Aero Glass application can restore the traditional Aero Glass look on your computer with just a few simple clicks, no matter if you are running Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.

Version 1.0 Beta 2 now supports the newly launched Windows 8.1, meaning transparency can be added to the new operating system. The underlying process is fairly complex, of course, as it requires tinkering with the core OS files to make sure the glass effect is correctly displayed on windows and dialog boxes.

Still, this works rather nicely for a software that is in the beta development stage.

That is not to say that it may not come with a number of bugs that could affect Windows 8.1. Plus its performance probably is not overly optimized. But it is a nice way to add some familiarity to the new operating system — particularly for diehard fans of Windows 7.

Head over to the official website to take Aero Glass 1.0 beta 2 for a spin.

  • That’s cool. I still wonder what’s in the future more Windows. Will the desktop turn into a background process that allows legacy applications to run. Will there eventually be a 3-D version of Metro. It might work similar to the Window flipping features started in Vista.
