While the Windows platform has an impressive library of millions of software applications just waiting to be ported as Metro apps, the situation is even more encouraging when it comes to games.

Casual games released in the past few years, in fact, are just a perfect fit for the Windows Store.

And the heartening signs are that many developers (and publishers) have started porting their games to Microsoft’s newest platform. One such famously hit title is the Chicken Invaders series — an arcade space shooter concerning feathery chickens and a hungry hero.

Before we get to the details, here is the official description:

“Chickens. For centuries we have oppressed them, grilling, roasting, stewing, and stuffing them in buns. We should have known the time would come for us to pay. And it did.

Intergalactic chickens invaded Earth, seeking revenge for the oppression of their earthly brethren. They came out of nowhere, and everywhere. It was only you who managed to repel the invasion, and saved humanity from an eternity of servitude.”

This being part 3 in the series, takes into account the story in the original game and the sequel.

But the premise in all the games in the Chicken Invaders series remains the same. The idea is to kill as many invading chickens as you possibly can while trying to find your way through various galactic star systems. Oh, and collecting bonuses and medals along the journey.

I first came by this engaging (and downright funny) game a few years back, and this Windows Store version is a perfectly fine and perfectly playable port.

While available for the sweet, sweet price of free, the game does not support Windows RT.

It however works perfectly on both x86 and x64 versions of Windows, with either a mouse or a keyboard. And if you are in the mood for some casual shooting fun, then you cannot do much better than this game. Stop reading and download this now.
