AT&T for the Lumia 920. This is a shared frustration. Nokia has great designs, but it is in fiscal trouble. The logical choice here is to give it the widest possible exposure that you can. This means more people can buy Nokia devices, and more folks can get exposure to Windows Phone 8. As a Verizon user, I was strongly considering the Lumia 920 if it managed to make its way to the network. Now, I have one less WP choice. Well, not the end of the world I suppose- I mean, there is alternative WP8 and Windows 8 devices that will be coming to other networks. While carriers like Verizon and T-Mobile will get Windows-based mobile devices, details about their device launches aren’t nearly as constant as AT&T/Microsoft announcements and news. A strong marriage between Microsoft and AT&T seems to be in place. It now seems likely that the HTC Phone 8x will also be an AT&T exclusive, taking away yet another potential option for other carriers. This is great news for AT&T Windows fans at least. AT&T has now announced that it will be carrying several Windows 8 tablets that feature mobile broadband connections. One of these devices is the Asus VivoTab RT. This WinRT tablet is a quad-core Tegra 3 device that includes a 10.1-inch super IPS touchscreen, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It will also have the RT version of Office 2013 present and accounted for. Not a bad offering by any means if you want an ARM Windows device. Next we have the ATIV Smart PC, which has a large 11.6-inch display, 64GB of storage, an Intel Clover Trail 1.5GHz dual-core processor and detachable keyboard dock. This also comes with the full Office 2013 experience and will use LTE broadband. We don’t know pricing or availability yet. We also don’t know if the broadband versions of these tablets are exclusive to AT&T or not, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
Windows 8 and Phone 8 – Where are other carrier options at?
So where are the Win8 and WP8 devices for other carriers? While I’m a little worried myself about the lack of options, Verizon and T-Mobile have both told us that they are definitely bringing WP8 devices to their networks. Have a little faith I guess? We just haven’t seen much in the hardware department. The Samsung ATIV S is coming to Verizon – I believe. Not sure if it will feature on any of the other carriers, though. Even smaller carriers like U.S. Cellular are committed to Windows Phone 8, even if no specific phone announcements exist yet. The only one of the ‘big carriers’ that seems to be giving us the silent treatment completely for Windows Phone 8 and Win8 is Sprint.
