Here’s your daily dose of irony! German institute AV-TEST has revealed its latest antivirus test involving a total of 18 security suites, revealing the best Windows antivirus in the process.

The endurance test was conducted for six straight months between January and June 2017.

And it showed Kaspersky as the most powerful security product for the operating system, putting up an outstanding showing across the board in protection, performance, and usability. The star of the show raked up a total of 18 points.

Ironically, it is facing a ban in the United States — the FBI has recently started to put pressure on US companies to abandon this antivirus as it considers the Russian company a threat to national security.

Two other solutions came close to Kaspersky Internet Security, with 17.8 points, namely Symantec Norton Security and Trend Micro Internet Security. Both these programs received 6 points for protection and performance, and 5.8 points for usability.

Here are the charts:

Excellent stuff, and should serve as a guide for home users of Windows 10 that want the best protection for their computers.

In fact, as the German institute points out, a total of 13 products managed 16 points, which means more than two third of the products on the market provide good protection without hampering system performance.

As for free protection, Avast is the best free antivirus, scoring a total of 16.5 points.

Windows Defender finished bottom of the table, just above the package from Comodo, which came in with just 13.6 points. Both Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 come with Windows Defender enabled by default, but it’s clear that Microsoft’s solution is still years behind the competition.

Of which AV-TEST notes that paid antivirus solutions are still better than their free counterparts, and it still is worth paying for third-party security protection on a Windows system.
