It was 58 years ago, today, that William Henry Gates III opened his eyes for the first time in Seattle, Washington. Born to William H. Gates Sr. and Mary Maxwell Gates, this little kid was destined for greatness from the very start.
Gates was only 20 years old when he founded Microsoft on April 4, 1975.
And he is currently the richest man in the world with a net worth estimated to be in the range of $72 billion, according to the latest data from Forbes and Bloomberg.
But while most of us already know how Bill brought the Redmond Empire to life, he is currently busy with something equally important — choosing a new leader for Microsoft to guide the company through these testing times.
It was in January, 2000 that Gates stepped down as chief executive of Microsoft and handed over duties to Steve Ballmer. But with Ballmer poised to step down within the next few months, the quest for finalizing a new CEO for the company has entered a crucial phase.
As part of the special committee formed by the Microsoft board to decide on a new CEO, Gates is currently said to be reviewing a shortlist of potential candidates.
October 28, 1955 was one momentous day, and the best part is that the story is far from over. The man still commands immense respect in the technology community, and it is always a pleasure hearing him talk, even if he is not doing it as Microsoft CEO.
So happy birthday, Mr. Gates! Here is to a very delightful party and many more such celebrations!
