Microsoft late last week made it official that its BUILD 2014 developer conference is indeed slated for April in San Francisco, while also hinting at some new product unveils at the anticipated event.

Without offering any specifics, the software titan confirmed that we should find out about what is next for platforms like Windows, Windows Phone, Windows Azure, Windows Server, Visual Studio and more. In other words, expect a grand showing.

The company confirmed the event, saying:

“As always, Build is a time to bring developers together to talk about our latest products, platform advances, tools and offerings, all of which come together to create unmatched apps and scenarios.

With Windows, developers can create new experiences to reach hundreds of millions of devices on peoples’ desks, in their homes, in their pockets and in their living rooms.”

Obviously, there are two big reasons why Microsoft decided on the April date for BUILD — one is the next version of Windows, and another is an old favorite that has outlived its welcome.

There have been rumors aplenty about the Spring GDR update to Windows that is expected to bring along a lot of new features — and maybe even some new hardware in the form of the Surface Mini. Spring is in its full swing in April, after all.

And well, Windows XP is also set to go dark on April 8, 2014.

The company will surely want to talk to developers, hardware and software companies, and the media about the number of users that would have made the transition to a newer platform by then.

Mark your calendars, then, as Microsoft says, and buckle up your seatbelts, just in case.
