There are more than one reasons why the April 2014 date for Microsoft’s BUILD developer conference makes all sorts of sense, and now you can add another one to the list.

A notification center and virtual assistance have been rumored since around the middle of this year, and now another source claims that both these features are coming in the next major upgrade to Microsoft’s mobile operating system.

Now The Verge is confident that these features are set to be revealed at BUILD 2014 in April.

And although no time frame is provided, it is claimed that Microsoft is currently beta testing the Windows Phone 8.1 update and readying it for release.

The Notification Center in Windows Phone 8.1 will operate similar to the versions on Android and iOS. Microsoft, it seems has employed the traditional modus operandi of a long swipe from the top of the screen to display notifications from different applications.

Cortana, is probably just a codename from the AI character in the Halo series of games. But this digital voice assistance will also operate to how Google Now and Apple Siri function.

A number of other features are also reportedly coming to Windows Phone 8.1 — from volume controls for the different aspects of the operating system to the much anticipated VPN support. Microsoft is also looking to revamp and refine some other integral areas of the mobile operating system.
