tweet sent out earlier today, Ash said that the team is working on voice activation feature for Cortana, and one factor they are keeping in mind is that of ambient background noise:
“Something to think about as we design voice activation for #Cortana. Don’t want Jesse sending texts on your behalf.”Currently, the only way to launch Cortana is by holding the search button or tapping the live tile. Obviously, voice activation is a big part of Google Now (where a user says OK Google) to launch the digital assistant. It is also part of Xbox One, though Apple Siri is without this feature. But Cortana fans are to be treated to this very soon, it seems. As long as there is an option to turn it off, though, not everyone wants features like these.]]>

Certainly a key feature. Nothing worse than having Cortana listen to you when you don’t want it to! Nice move, Microsoft!
The same as what Android does and what Apple wants to do.
Since Cortana will likely be in Windows, and Xbox as well as Windows Phone Microsoft should look into letting users name their own devices. It would suck to say “Cortana” and have your phone, computer and Xbox all answer you.
That makes sense. They could have different commands, but that would just confuse people.
Not different commands, just different names for your devices. So my phone could be “Cortana”, my PC could be “Alyx”, my Xbox One can be “Hal”…or whatever I want to name my devices. If you have 3 friends named James and someone says “Hey James”, who will answer? Maybe people call you by “James and your middle last name”, maybe they call you just by your last name, you need to differentiate yourselves and your devices should be the same way.
