Microsoft rolled out a new firmware update for its second generation Surface Pro tablet earlier this month, as scheduled, with the intention of improving and optimizing the battery life and performance of its premium slate.
But as reported earlier, the update is causing more harm than good.
Some users that have installed the latest firmware are experiencing a few issues, with no clear workarounds, official or unofficial. Now the company has acknowledged these problems and has decided to remove the firmware update completely until the issues are resolved.
This post by a Microsoft support engineer on the company’s official forum reveals the details:
“To ensure the best experience for our customers during the holiday season, we have taken steps to remove the update for Surface Pro 2 that was previously published through Windows Update on December 10th, 2013. We are working to release an alternative update package after the holidays.”
If you were planning to install the firmware, your only bet now is to wait for a fixed version to launch after the holidays — in all probability as part of the January 2014 Patch Tuesday updates.
The update is no longer being delivered via the integrated Windows Update option.
And speaking about issues, the most common and widespread ones have got something to do with battery life drainage, failure to install correctly and glitches that wake the tablet up from sleep mode randomly, though it is not entirely clear if the firmware itself is responsible for these problems.
