A good day to download hard, as they say! WinZip for Windows 8 is one of the better (and more powerful, as far as the feature set is concerned) compression tools for the new operating system.
And it has just gone freeware, as of right now.
The app boasts a fully touch-optimized interface specially designed to run in Metro mode making it a good option for those running Windows RT on tablets. It obviously supports the x86 and x64 versions of Windows 8 as well.
WinZip for Windows 8 was released back in November, with a price tag of $7.99. A trial version, however, was available giving users the ability to test drive before buying it. WinZip, as you may well be aware, has a particularly long history as a traditional desktop application for Windows.
As the rather large description reads:
“WinZip for Windows 8 gives you more power, more sharing options and more ease of use than ever with the muscle needed to safely handle large files on the go. Open and save zip and zipx file formats. Zip files and folders for faster, easier sharing. Zip, unzip and share in the cloud with new support for world-leading Dropbox, Google Drive and SkyDrive cloud services.
Password-protect important info with military-grade encryption. Squeeze files even more, including JPGs, with the exclusive zipx compression format. With the strength of the world’s #1 Zip utility at your fingertips, and deep integration with your social accounts and cloud drives, WinZip makes it easy to securely share files from anywhere.”
How long the freeware license lasts is anybody’s guess, so if you want to download it, stop reading and check it out on the Windows Store right away.
