Wonder what’s taking Facebook to code up official apps for the Windows Phone platform, which in reality is a bit older and a bit more widespread than the Windows 8 and RT show.

While vanilla Windows 8 users often prefer the power and flexibility of the standard web interface of the social network, they are in line to get the official Facebook app later this year. This was confirmed at the BUILD conference earlier this year, obviously.

Windows Phone user base, on the other hand, has had a bit of help from Microsoft in this regard.

Redmond has cooked up unofficial Facebook clients for Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 7.8. and users of the older version of Microsoft’s mobile platform can now get their hands on an updated flavor of the app, the same one that Windows Phone 8 owners received a few weeks back.

The Facebook app has just recently been updated to version 5.0.3.0, and although no specifics have been provided on the latest enhancements, WMPowerUser notes that the prime addition is the support for Windows Phone 7.8 devices.

Facebook Beta 5.1.0.1 was made available for Windows Phone 8 users on August 21.

The app is now available for free for all users, and comes with a slightly overhauled interface (compared to the previous versions), along with better performance, improved navigation and support for multiple resolutions and tile sizes.

You can find this new version of the Facebook on the Windows Phone Store.
