Intel has had a bit of a bona fide success on its hand with its current Bay Trail platform, with several Microsoft partners choosing the Atom processor to bring to market several affordable devices capable of running Windows 8.1 Pro.
Many of these tablets and convertibles are out in the market, and others should hit the store shelves by the holiday shopping season later this month.
But now a new leak provides some details of what the chip giant is planning next.
It appears the world’s biggest processor maker will release a new system-on-chip for tablets that will be under the same Atom brand, but fare quite a bit better in the performance department. This improved SoC is called Cherry Trail-T and is said to be designed on a 14nm process.
The upcoming processor will be a quad-core unit running at a 2.7GHz clock rate with support for up to 8GB DDR3-1600. A 64-bit data width and a memory bandwidth of 25.6 GB/s is rumored.
For comparison’s sake, the current Bay Trail-T is a quad-core with 2.4GHz, built on a 22nm process and can take up 4GB of DDR3-1067 memory at a maximum. Bandwidth on this one is limited to between just around 8.5 to 17.5 GB/s.
In terms of operating system support, Cherry Trail-T is set to support Windows 8.1 and Android Key Lime (or newer), making for some very exciting possibilities — dual-boot or otherwise.
And finally, Cherry Trail-T will also be compatible with eDP v1.4, DisplayPort 1.2, while offering support for HDMI streaming at resolutions of 4K by 2K, however the feature set included will vary by each individual tablet maker.
