Is it time for the rebranding of Windows?

ThisIsMyNext.com is reporting that Microsoft may be considering rebranding the entire Windows ecosystem and here’s the kicker – scrapping the Windows name might be an option. The excerpt:

Turns out that almost exactly describes something we heard from a source the other day, and we’ve got some more details that point to a far more radical plan within Microsoft. What we’ve been told is that Microsoft is planning to somehow harmonize not only Windows for PCs and Windows Phone, but also the Xbox operating system sometime within the next four years — a timeframe that perfectly lines up with both the end of the Xbox 360′s 10-year lifecycle and the end of Windows 8′s expected three-year run. That would mean Microsoft’s next next OS will run on PCs, tablets, phones, and the next-gen Xbox when it hits sometime in 2015 / 2016. Yes, it sounds crazy, but it fits perfectly within the broad outlines Lees confirmed during his keynote yesterday. And that’s not even the wildest part. Our sources also tell us that Microsoft is seriously considering ditching the “Windows” brand name in favor of something new when all this goes down. The idea is to rebrand this new super-OS with something that better fits with Redmond’s vision of the future. Obviously that could well change over the next few years as this plan takes shape — Steve Ballmer in particular has always been quite enamored with the Windows brand — but dropping the name is apparently at least on the table, and that’s a big step.
I have to be honest, I cannot imagine a world without Windows in some form of the other. That name has been with me for over 2 decades and has come to symbolize stability and safety as far as an operating system goes. Yes some people might say that Windows is boring and Microsoft have become like IBM but be that as it may, Windows is one of the most powerful brands in the world. I have to let this one digest for a bit but let me ask, what do you guys and girls think? Are you ready for a world without Windows?]]>

  • I think it is definitely one of the best things microsoft could ever do. The windows brandname has become so unpopular and is always combined with ‘please wait while windows …’ . They should only make sure that they don’t just change the name. They should also make some thorough changes to their OS, something tablet like, the instant-on thing. I don’t want to wait half an hour until my pc has completely booted up. I want to press a button and start right off.

  • Oh I love the Windows name, but I must agree with 1775marines with the “Please wait while Windows …….!” There goes my coffee making time as she loads 😛 I remember the days of Windows 3.1 and my all time fav 98 SE, but they do need to change and not just the name but the looks of and behavior of it too.
