Spring cleaning? Perfect time for it. Microsoft have given the Windows Store another round of cleaning, removing several fake and low quality apps along the way.
As a result, the total number of apps in the store dropped significantly last week.
You may recall that Redmond promised last year to remove junk from the Windows 8 store by blocking and removing apps that did not meet certain quality standards. But while the software titan failed to provide for a more stringent approval process, this is the next best thing.
As this data provided by MetroStore Scanner indicates, the total number of applications available in the Windows Store dropped from 204,101 to 196,446 within the span of a just a few days — a total of 7,655 applications have been removed in this round.
An indication that Microsoft has addressed the app quality issue and removed applications that tried to trick users into buying and downloading? You bet it is.
No official confirmation of any sorts, though.
Meaning business as usual.
Of course, removing low quality, fake and spam apps this way (instead of some quality control before publishing them in the first place) is not the most ideal of situations. Unsuspecting users are tricked into buying these junk applications and people that create them are not actually deterred.
But at least, Microsoft is aware of this app quality issue, and is doing something to amend it.
