message stating that accounts no longer need to be renewed every year. The notification displayed, reads something like this:

“Developer accounts don’t expire. You won’t need to renew your account in order to keep your apps in the Store.”
If you recall, the annual registration fee for developers was a lot higher, a while back. Previously, Microsoft asked everyone to pay $99 a year to maintain an account. This price was reduced in June 2013 via a special promo, which was then made permanent in order to attract more software developers to the platform. Anyway, this is what it should have been from the get go. The one time signup fee still remains, though. It is pretty affordable, and the company can use it for basic credit card verification, plus it also somewhat ensures that the two stores are not absolutely flooded with spam, scam or low quality apps.]]>

  • If renewal isn’t free, dropping the fee for developers is a nice move. Hopefully this results in more apps for all of us as you were suggesting!

  • Yeah I see no need to charge developers. You make much more money off them making apps than you charging them
