listing a few weeks back even confirmed that something was cooking over at Redmond. And now there is another hint that such an app could be released for Windows 8.1 in the very near future, as Barnes and Noble looks set to pull its official client from the Windows Store, the one that it launched all the way back in November 2012. This new filing by the company with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission reveals that Microsoft is working on what is being called the “Microsoft Consumer Reader” app. The exact words:
“The Amendment also provided that subject to certain conditions NOOK Media would be permitted to discontinue distributing the NOOK Windows app and will cooperate in good faith with Microsoft to transition users to the Microsoft Consumer Reader.”Long story short, the Nook app for Windows 8.1 now looks set to be discontinued in favor of the upcoming Microsoft solution, and it appears that it could have some Nook co-branding to go with it. Redmond has invested $300 million in a joint venture with B&N, after all. What this also means is that Barnes and Noble will probably not release a Nook app for the Windows Phone platform, but one can hope that whatever Microsoft is cooking also makes an appearance on the Windows Phone Store.]]>

If Nook co-branding is involved, this could work. My concern is that they waited too long to capture this market. If they jumped at this idea sooner, maybe their app would me the more notable one.

This is obviously the proper move. We are moving toward a paperless world and having your own app to profit off of makes too much sense not to have. I hope the quality is there!
I believe Microsoft Consumer Reader will not be the app name but refers to a reader platform that will be integrated into various apps. Looking forward to the reading experience and how Nook store is integrated.
