Another day, another operating system launch from Microsoft. The software titan announced the general availability of Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry in in October.
And now the company has debuted Windows Server 2012 R2 for Embedded Systems.
Just like the aforementioned industry operating system, the server version of Microsoft’s embedded operating system is largely based upon the improvements that were made to Windows 8.1 — you know, the Windows Blue companywide initiative.
Partha Srinivasan, the product manager for Microsoft’s Windows Embedded Server and SQL Products, made the announcement in a post, saying that the new server software brings enhanced virtualization capabilities and other improvements for enterprise and OEM customers.

“The time it takes to complete a live migration has been cut in half. We’ve increased data transfer rates to 10 gigabits per second, greatly enhancing speed. We’ve also added support for USB access in guest VMs, making it easier to perform software deployment and file management.”
These improvements, the company says, will finally allow businesses the ability to run small servers in locations that are space constrained.
The blog post above makes note of one such location that does not have a lot of space — Lufthansa Systems. Windows Server 2012 R2 for Embedded Systems is used to create an application that handles inflight entertainment on airplanes by the airline.
