So I step away from this blog for 10 seconds and Microsoft go bonkers on me with yet another possible Windows 8 update.
Bloggers are starting to talk about a new wave of updates that might form the nucleus of what we will call Windows 8.2. Right now though, the nickname being used for these updates is “Threshold”.
There are a couple of new rumors that hit the interwebs today and might be fun.
Metro apps coming to the desktop.
It seems like Microsoft may be bringing the apps in the modern UI into the traditional desktop. Not quite sure exactly what that would look like but it’s an interesting concept if you ask me.
Start Menu returning
This might be the biggest Mea Culpa plea in history if true. Paul Thurrott is reporting that Microsoft might actually be bringing back the Start Menu. They brought back the Start Button already in Windows 8.1 but it’s pretty clear that it was a bullshit half measure. This would be things coming full circle if true.
We’ll keep track of all the new Threshold/Windows 8.2 developments so stay tuned.

1. Metro tiles on the desktop reminds me of Gadgets coming back in a sort of way. I hardly ever use the desktop now, but it would be interesting to see how they work that one out.
2. I don’t have any need for the “old” Start Menu and I hope they keep it as it is … but that’s just me.
Now, what I wish they would do is make the desktop more Metro-like in some fashion. It’s looks tired and has been around in its current implementation for years on end. Mix it up, guys! Get creative with it.
Also, I believe Threshold won’t come out until sometime in 2015. I understood that it is the next generation after the Blue movement.
I’m interested in seeing if there are any noticeable changes in the Spring update called GDR 1 or Update 1.

ms is really confusing people lately, have to say. I got used to 8/1 and now they are going to go back? Also i was reading this would be a update like 8.1 and come out in jan 2014. What in the world would they do with windows 9? This seems like a major update from 8.1 Changing the whole design and look and putting in a bunch of other things. I am also not see this come out in Jan, unless ms has been toiling away in secret!
That has always been my point. The more and more people get used to the current versions of Windows, making things more like older versions brings nothing but confusion and disconnection. We don’t need the full start menu back. We just need to refine the one in 8.1 and find a way to easier access the top uses of the old start menu whether it be the library links, search box, or recent applications. Heck they could make what is the 8.1 start list a charm bar. You right-click the start menu and a charm by comes up with some of the same options at the 8.1 start menu
Although I am just starting to use and get used to 8.1/Server 2012, I think the start menu is a good thing. This will open the door for more corporate installations. There are too many legacy programs out there that need a desktop environment.

As a side note. I REALLY hope this is true. It would be a dream come true. I want to run windows 8 apps in a window and have a good start menu.

In my opinion, the best solution is to combine live tiles and start menu, which only occupies part of the screen, but not the whole.
