Microsoft May Just Extend Windows 7 Retail Sales

Redmond seems to have had another change of heart. After news came out that recently Microsoft was ready to end retail sales of Windows 7, the company seems to be reconsidering the date.

The move to end sales of Windows 7 via retail channels was clearly supposed to push users towards the company’s modern operating systems like Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. Windows 7 would still have been available via OEM channels, however.

But while the Windows lifecycle fact sheet page previously indicated that Windows 7 retail sales ended October 20, 2013, it seems that the company has quietly made some adjustments.

The page now shows that the particular date is yet to be determined.

Additionally, and equally interestingly, Redmond has also readjusted the date at which sales of PCs with Windows 7 preinstalled will end. The previous date here was October 30, 2014.

Microsoft is yet to provide any official statement on this change, but it could well be the result of the surprising (some would say unsurprising) popularity of Windows 7 — particularly among users and businesses upgrading from the good old Windows XP.

What about you guys? Wise move on Microsoft’s part, considering the number of Windows XP users that are looking to upgrade to Windows 7? Share your thoughts below.

  • I hope they won’t extend Windows 7 retail sales. Time to end this unreasonable long term supports for old operating systems.

  • They don’t need to extend it. Maybe they want to appear as if they will extend, but they and their hardware vendors need to be pushing Windows 8.x hard. Plus, no one expects a decade of support for any other product on the planet.
